HIST Delegation Participates in UNESCO International Symposium in Kuala Lumpur

At the invitation of Ms. Lidia Brito, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences at UNESCO, a delegation from the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage (HIST) under the auspices of UNESCO, led by Director GUO Huadong and Secretary-General LIU Shaobo, attended the International Symposium of the Category 2 Institutes and Centres under the auspices of UNESCO in the Natural Sciences from May 15 to 17, 2024.
The symposium aimed to explore key topics such as Open Science, the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development, science policy, water science, Earth sciences, heritage conservation, disaster risk reduction, and basic sciences. It sought to enhance coordination and cooperation among UNESCO's Category 2 Centres under the Natural Sciences sector, leveraging diverse expertise and resources to offer scientific solutions for sustainable development worldwide. The event also aimed to build a global platform for scientific collaborative innovation, contributing to the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
More than 100 representatives from over 30 UNESCO Category 2 institutes and centres, hailing from more than 20 countries including China, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the Congo, attended the symposium. During the event, Prof. GUO Huadong delivered a presentation titled “ST-based Solutions for World Heritage Protection and Sustainable Development.” He highlighted HIST's key research projects, academic publications, heritage platforms, and global network achievements, along with future plans.
During the symposium, the HIST delegation reported to UNESCO on their suggestions for implementing the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development. Ms. Lidia Brito acknowledged HIST's contributions to UNESCO, endorsed their proposed collaborative initiatives, and expressed hope for continued collaboration in areas such as the Man and the Biosphere Programme and disaster risk reduction.
This symposium served as a platform to showcase HIST's research achievements, gain insights into the latest developments in heritage conservation, climate change, and disaster reduction within UNESCO, and foster international scientific exchanges and cooperation with UNESCO’s Natural Sciences sector and relevant Category 2 Centres. The event bolstered HIST's international influence, laying a solid foundation for its third phase of operation.
