Workshop on Remote Sensing Applications on Hydrology and Water Resources and Climate Change Held in Kenya

On May 24, 2024, four experts from the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) visited Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJOREC) in Kenya. Together with SAJOREC, they hosted a workshop titled "Remote Sensing Applications for Hydrology, Water Resources, and Climate Change," focusing on remote sensing technology for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over 40 experts and students from SAJOREC and JKUAT participated.
The workshop, chaired by Dr. George Watene of JKUAT, began with an overview by Associate Researcher Wei Xianhu, Principal Investigator of the SAJOREC. Professor Gituru Robert, the African Director of SAJOREC, delivered a welcome address highlighting the collaboration between the institutions.
Dr. Thomas Ngigi, former Head of the GIS Department at JKUAT, introduced JKUAT’s Geomatic Engineering & GIS program to CBAS. Then, CBAS experts presented a series of training sessions on remote sensing applications.
Professor Lu Shanlong detailed CBAS's core journals, achievements, and related products, and provided an overview of remote sensing for hydrology and water resources. Professor Huang Lei discussed advancements in Earth Big Data for supporting SDG13 climate action, emphasizing the current state of climate change and response measures. Professor Tang Yunwei presented on the SDGSAT-1 satellite and its applications for SDG monitoring, highlighting its sensor capabilities and case studies.
The workshop strengthened academic exchanges on remote sensing and SDG applications between CBAS, SAJOREC, and JKUAT. Participants gained insights into the latest advancements in hydrology, water resources, climate change applications, and SDGSAT-1 satellite technology. The event promoted CBAS’s research and sustainable development data products, facilitating interdisciplinary exchanges and strategies for leveraging big data to achieve global sustainable development goals.
