CropWatch Team Conducts Field Survey in Kenya
Jul 19, 2023
Dr. ZENG Hongwei, an AIR scientist from the CropWatch team went to Nairobi, Kenya from 28 to 29 June 2023 to help the country promote capability of agriculture monitoring by training the staff of its Ministry of Agriculture on the use of GVG for the crop classification.
GVG is a mobile phone app developed by CropWatch team for rapid collection of crop types and identification of land cover types. It integrates the functions of positioning, photographing and attribute labeling, capable of rapid collection of crop types and land cover samples by combining mobile and fixed-point methods, providing data support for crop classification and land cover classification based on remote sensing.
The two-day training as well as field survey were conducted at GATUNDU County, Kenya. In partnership with the Statistics Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Zeng Hongwei introduced the functions of GVG, including its downloading, installation, registration, and other operations in details, and led the trainees to carry out field collection of crop types through on-site demonstration.
The Kenyan team not only succeeded in mastering how to use the GVG app to survey crop types, but also found that the information collected by the GVG app could be used to assess crop growth.
This Kenyan tour was jointly supported by the CropWatch-ICP project which is funded by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) together with the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), and an international project on the advanced agriculture remote sensing monitoring methods under the framework of GEOGLAM.
