Jun 07, 2023
The International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on June 6, outlining mutual commitment to seek big data-driven solutions to promote sustainable agriculture and food systems, and to facilitate the realization of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The MOU was listed as one of the practical measures proposed at the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) which was held in New York in September 2022 to implement the outcomes of the High-Level Dialogue on Global Development and GDI cooperation.
Signing on behalf of CBAS, an international research centre committed to harnessing big data to support the SDGs, Director-General GUO Huadong said that sustainable agriculture and food systems are critical for achieving global food security which is challenged by a variety of factors such as climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation.
He said that big data is an accelerator to promote the realization of multiple food-related SDGs. By signing the MoU, CBAS and FAO will forge a comprehensive strategic partnership for delivering sustainable food systems and join hands to offer global public goods and services in support of SDGs, GUO added.
Signing on behalf of FAO, Deputy Director-General Maria Helena Semedo said that science-based solutions are urgently needed to promote the sustainable transformation in agri-food systems and to improve global food security and nutrition.
She held that the collaboration between FAO and CBAS will inject impetus to the transformation in global agriculture and food systems and to make positive and sustainable impacts on people, prosperity and the planet.
