Nov 03, 2022

On November 1, the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), together with UN-Habitat and the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21 (ACCA21), organized an online seminar with the theme "International Cooperation on Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals" as a side event to the 2022 World Cities Day Global Observance and 2nd SDG Cities Global Conference. Prof. Guo Huadong, the Director General of CBAS, and Dr. Robert Ndugwa, the Chief of Data and Analytics Section at UN-Habitat, signed and exchanged Letter of Intent for collaboration under the CBAS Global SDG Partnership framework.

The Letter of Intent marks CBAS and UN-Habitat's willingness to enter into a long-term strategic partnership for the sustainable development. The two parties are committed to utilize their respective resources, platforms, and capacities on various collaborative subjects including data sharing, expert exchanges, knowledge promotion, joint research, technical consultation, etc, to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.

"We are now in a pivotal position, at this mid-point of the 2030 Agenda, to review our progress and plan for the future," and "we realize the importance of multilateral cooperation to develop comprehensive solutions for complex global challenges and therefore welcome any and all opportunities to work with international organizations and partners," Guo said in his remarks.

Robert Ndugwa expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership ahead saying "we are committed to expand this cooperation at all levels. We can build those services and infrastructures that can be scaled form local to national and global and find more opportunities to involve citizen science systems, improve data coverage, and better implementation of SDGs."

UN-Habitat Inter-Regional Advisor Rong Yang and Director-General of the ACCA21 Huang Jing delivered opening remarks at the event. Other participants included Chief of the UN-Habitat Beijing Office Zhang Zhenshan and Deputy Director of CBAS Chen Fang. 35 experts from CBAS, UN-Habitat, and ACCA21 participated the seminar.

The CBAS Global SDG Partnership is an international cooperation programme initiated on the September 6th at the 2022 FBAS. Joined by 14 leading scientific institutions worldwide as inaugurating partners, the Partnership is looking for organizations that are active in the field of sustainable development to synergize research and development efforts within the priority areas of CBAS through efficient and replicable process, ensuring positive progress towards sustainability at local, national, regional, and global scales.
