International Training Workshop on Remote Sensing of Urban Environment Held

From August 8 to 13, the "Remote Sensing Information Processing and its Application in the Urban Environment" international summer training was successfully held, bringing experts in remote sensing information processing at home and abroad and participants to share frontier technology development and exploring how to solve S&T challenges facing the world.

As part of the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) training series, the event was sponsored by the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things in Smart Cities with the University of Macau and co-organized by the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The courses were delivered online and attracted 665 scholars from 35 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Pakistan, Japan, South Korea, Ethiopia and China. Scholars from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Tokyo, University of Bristol, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Tsinghua University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Taiwan University and other well-known universities participated in the courses.

SONG Yonghua, President of UM and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, CAO Jinghua, Executive Director of the ANSO Secretariat, and ZHANG Bing, Deputy Director of AIR delivered opening speeches respectively.

Song noted that the theme of the training courses is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 11 -- "Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable", which is also an important research topic of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City at UM.

Cao Jinghua introduced the background, vision, goals and cooperation network of ANSO. He hoped that the promotion of remote sensing technology and application would contribute to urban sustainable development.

Zhang Bing reviewed that remote sensing technology in China is in the stage of rapid development, and emphasized that AIR will continue to promote the innovation of space information core technology. He also introduced the "Space Information Joint Laboratory" jointly built by the Institute and the University of Macau. He hoped that the two sides could continue to cultivate talents, promote research achievements and enhance its influence among international academic community.

The lectures were given by Prof. MENG Qingyan from AIR, Prof. Sorin HERBAN from the Politehnica University of Timisoara, Prof. WANG Dagang from the Sun Yat-sen University, Prof. CHEN Sheng from the Northwest Institute of Ecology, Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ZHU Zhenduo, assistant professor from the State University of New York at Buffalo, GAO Liang, assistant professor from the University of Macau, and MA Zhewen from PIESAT Information Technology Co., Ltd.

Prof. Meng introduced the urban environment remote sensing theory and technology, combined with the practical application of case analysis. He also focused on the urban green space and urban heat space remote sensing technology and the latest research and technology solutions on August 9 and 10. In addition, the Urban Environment Remote Sensing team is actively making cooperation with the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City of the University of Macau, and jointly training a number of doctoral students.
