Three AIR Research Projects Win 2020 Beijing S&T Award

According to a recent announcement on the Beijing Science and Technology Award, the 2020 Award recognized 14 scientists and 150 research projects, among which included three projects from the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The three projects are "Remote Sensing Mechanism on Aerosol Components Crucial to Air Pollution and Climate Change”, "Key Technology and Application of Integrated Remote Sensing Satellite Data Receiving Network”, and "Remote Sensing Monitoring of Urban Black and Malodorous Water Body - Key Technology and Application Research".

Based on the project "Remote Sensing Mechanism on Aerosol Components Crucial to Air Pollution and Climate Change”, the research team has developed a smog conversion particle modal equation which reshaped the remote sensing mechanism on recognizing brown carbon components. Based on this, a remote sensing inversion method of five kinds of aerosol components was developed to support the design of Gaofen-5 02 and other satellites for atmospheric environment monitoring.

The research provides key evidence and data support for the study of smog cause and prevention and control mechanism specifically in key areas of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. The project has been selected for global demonstration by the Space Climate Observatory (SCO) and supported the intergovernmental climate change response actions.

Based on the project "Key Technology and Application for the Integrated Remote Sensing Satellite Data Receiving Network", China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station (RSGS) has built a fully localized operational system capable of automatic management, greatly upgrading the performance of RSGS as a national major science infrastructure.

The project "Remote Sensing Monitoring of Urban Black and Malodorous Water Body - Key Technology and Application Research", led by AIR, has developed a new system for quick identification of black and smelly water using satellite remote sensing technology.

The new method has greatly improved the efficiency of water inspection and has been implemented in 64 cities that are at and above prefecture level, promoting comprehensive treatment of black and malodorous water bodies.

The Beijing Science and Technology Award is sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Government to honor annually the outstanding individuals and organizations working on science and technology domain for their contributions to such areas as identified by the outline of Beijing economic and social development plan, the accomplishments through coordinated efforts of the government, enterprises, universities, and research institutions, or those that have independent intellectual property rights or regarded as national or international standards.
