Council of AIR Established

The Inaugural Meeting and the First Plenary Meeting of the First Council of Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was held on January 7, 2020 in Beijing.

XIANGLI Bin, Vice President of CAS and Director of AIR Council, together with WU Yirong, Director-General of AIR and Deputy Director of AIR Council, jointly unveiled the nameplate of AIR. YU Yingjie, Director of the Bureau of Major R&D Programs under CAS announced the approval document on the establishment of AIR. The unveiling ceremony was presided over by CAI Rong, Deputy Director of AIR.

YU Yingjie chaired the meeting and announced the Council members. WU Yirong presented a report on the preparatory work of AIR and its next-phase of development plan.

XIANGLI Bin highly appreciated the great work that AIR has done during the past two years for the integration of administrative departments, human and research resources. He also highlighted great efforts AIR has made to improve its research capability, to boost research results, and to cultivate excellent researchers. .

He put forward three directions for the follow-up development of AIR. Firstly, AIR should stay true to its mission and shoulder responsibility of boosting strategic technological strength on the new starting point. He emphasized that AIR should speed up the creation of a cradle for innovation, make breakthroughs in key technologies, and strive to hold a leading position in the S&T fields. Secondly, AIR must seize the opportunity to lead major research projects and give full play to ensure good accomplishment. Thirdly, AIR should formulate its own science plan, and do a good job in formulating the medium- and long-term development strategy.

YU Yingjie said that AIR’s reform has achieved significant results, serving as a model in the institutional reform of CAS by which CAS research institutes are followed into four categories. As he suggested, AIR should continue to strengthen fundamental research and application-oriented basic research as well as interdisciplinary integration.

WU Yirong thanked all members of AIR Council and CAS leaders for their great support to the reform and development of AIR. Wu promised that AIR would build itself on the new starting point, do a good job in the next stage and continue to push forward institutional reform, and make new achievements in 2020.

The meeting brought together representatives of AIR and CAS officials from the Department of General Administration, Bureau of Major R&D Programs, Bureau of S&T for Development, Bureau of Development Planning, Bureau of Infrastructure, Logistics & Finance, Bureau of Personnel, Bureau of International Cooperation, and Beijing Branch under CAS.
